AC Adapter Buying Guide
Did you lose it? Break it? Or do you just need another?
I needed another adapter so that I could eliminate the first world problem of crawling behind furniture to plug the thing in. My OUYA gets ferried between buildings on a near daily basis, so having power cords at both places eliminates the hassle of console setup.
I searched Amazon and made the mistakes so you don’t have to, here are the two that I tried out:
Asian Power WA-18G12U
This adapter is the closest match to the OUYA model, but not quite close enough. The technical specs are all there, and it has the right connection, but the plug is just too short. It will plug into the OUYA, but the connection is far too loose.
Any movement of the cable or console results in the plug slipping out the back. This could be remedied with some physical alterations to OUYA’s connection backplate(or its outright removal). The alternate way to make this work is by shaving down the plug’s jacket, but I do not recommend this at all.
I don’t recommend this adapter, and luckily there is a better option on Amazon.
KTEC KSAS0241200150HU
Backers of the Developer model OUYA received these power adapters with their console. While manufactured for select Western Digital external hard drives, this adapter works perfectly with the OUYA. The adapter has a smaller profile, and its cord is about a foot shorter that the retail OUYA adapter.
I highly recommend this adapter. It works just as you’d hope, and it’s worth the extra couple of bucks to not mess with the problems of the Asian Power adapter.
It’s sold by Oceanside Store, but it is fulfilled by Amazon and is Prime eligible.
